HealthPartners Programs Saved $74 million in 2007
Your clients can rest assured that HealthPartners is a good steward of their health care dollars. In fact, in 2007, HealthPartners programs to improve the quality and efficiency of care reduced medical expenses by $74 million. Two primary areas of focus included diagnostic imaging and prescription drugs.
Last February, HealthPartners introduced a decision support program for diagnostic imaging which reduced unnecessary tests by more than $3.5 million. The program provides physicians the latest guidelines from the American College of Radiology to confirm that a test is appropriate.
Generic drugs biggest cost savings
HealthPartners program to encourage generic drug use resulted in the most cost reductions in 2007. Last year, 68 percent of prescriptions for HealthPartners members were for generic drugs. That number has been rising steadily since 2004 when only 50 percent of all prescriptions were for generics. Each 1 percent increase in generic drug use reduces costs for the health plan and members by $7 million.
HealthPartners was also successful in reducing expenses in other areas including:

Zyrtec® Goes Over-the-counter
The savings associated with generic drugs are nothing to sneeze at – especially now that Zyrtec is now available over-the-counter. HealthPartners is encouraging members to use Zyrtec® over-the-counter, rather than switch to an alternative prescription allergy medication. This will reduce out-of-pocket expenses for employees and utilization for employers.
